0.2 preview and roadmap

Just want to give a bit of an update for anyone following here looking forward to the next release. All of the content for 0.2 is done, testers are going through and telling me where I messed up and hopefully not getting any more crashes. Here's a preview of the new content and mechanics in the next release, and we'll see if I can get spoilers hidden correctly (seems like I can).

0.2 expected release is Friday, October 10. I may be able to get it out this week instead, but I can't promise.

0.2 New Content:

  • Long loops! You can now proceed for several days if you defeat the dragon and the empire.
  • Exposition! You can now talk to Master Osgood in the Reliquary (if your destiny is shining bright enough) and get a bunch of lore dump for the world and an explanation of what the main goal of the game will be.
  • Walking skill is enabled (must talk to Master Osgood). Increases movement speed and lets you transition between areas without losing time.
  • A new cutscene (and existing cutscenes slightly adjusted in timing)
  • A new area with new enemies, and the most challenging fights yet
  • New uses for the Diplomacy skill
  • Plus more! (not a lot more, but a little)

0.2 New / Modified Gameplay Mechanics

  • TP replaced by Stamina. Instead of gaining more energy to do cool moves, you start with energy and use it to do cool moves! Kinda more realistic that way, right? Max Stamina and Stamina regen rate are both increased with Physical Fitness levels. Base attack costs a little stamina, bigger attacks will cost more. If you run out of stamina mid-battle, you can still defend and rest up.
  • Regeneration skill now gives regen based on skill level, not just tiers
  • Many enemies now have new skills, resistances, and combat behaviors more than just doing basic attacks.
  • Finishing work orders now impacts the Empire fight (if you want!)

0.2 Bugfixes

  • Too many to note, and a lot of them were for content/gameplay introduced in 0.2 but I'll mention a few things
  • Fixed a crash that would happen when advancing time at the clock
  • More consistent behavior around the dragon showing up at time = 15 - removing repeated dialogue, better positioning, etc
  • Cleaned up dialogue and events in lumberyard that would result in loops, incorrect dialogue, and people being in two places at once
  • Better logic around Emmy's room and Mr. Harris's office permissions
  • Improved talking to Mr. Harris and entering the workshop early (did you know you could do that?)

Roadmap

  • Despite the great feedback from testers, I'm expecting at least one bugfix patch after 0.2
  • A few smaller content updates as 0.21, 0.22 etc. Smaller content update means expanding on some things currently in the game but not extending the story. Some likely small content packages include:
    • Gathering and Alchemy
    • Starsight
    • Academy counselor and library
    • Mage's guild library
  • Next big content update will be 0.3 - tentatively I would expect that to happen in November or maybe early December.
    • spoiler for 0.2 content: as of update 0.2 Graham can get up to level 92 Lumberjacking. Update 0.3 will get him to level 93, 0.4 to 94, and so on
  • Future of the project and revenue
    • I've talked about this on the Stubborn Skill Grinder discord but just want to get it out here as well: game development is a fun hobby for me, not a job, and it's unlikely to become a job. I have a full-time job that pays very well.
    • When this game is done, and when I've checked out licensing for any scripts and content I'm using, I'll change this from "free" to "pay what you want, minimum $0". If you want to express your support for the game monetarily, you'll be allowed but not required.
    • I may also at some point set up a Patreon, but I haven't thought too much about it. I don't want to paywall my content.
    • I'm learning Godot in order to make games with a little more freedom than RPGMaker. I have a few ideas for games I'd like to make, but "remastering" Learning Curve is a possibility.

Happy to answer questions, or if you have any thoughts about content you'd like to see expanded in the game let me know (I may put up a survey in the near future). See you soon for 0.2 release!

I would really love more lore added on to the game. Not gameplaywise but more so in the sense of history and geopoltics like why does the empire want clearwood? What nation is clear =wood in?
