A downloadable game for Windows

Graham wakes up, goes to work, dies. Then he wakes up again.

Learning Curve is a game about a guy stuck in a time loop, reliving the same day over and over again but gaining skill levels as he goes. Inspired by LitRPG novels (especially Stubborn Skill-Grinder in a Time Loop), take Graham from a lowly possibly-cursed lumberjack to the apex of power in his world.

This game is actively under development, when I have time for it. Sharing here for free because I hope other people will enjoy this game and give me feedback. Everything is still work-in-progress, including graphics and audio.

Made on RPGMaker VX Ace - only playable on Windows, sorry. (Maybe Linux? I don't know I'm not a Linux guy)

Clock works now, but IMO it kind of breaks the game: For example you can now train mana control in your home before you get it to level 5. You can also train it more often (Church only opens at 10 or 11, but you can use the clock to train it already at 1).

IMO it would make more sense to use the clock in a different way: Allow to select a single action of the current location (only actions that you‘re allowed to do and which can be repeated) and repeat that one until the dragon arrives.

Example: At the blacksmith (once you‘re allowed to use the workspace) allow to repeat either „practice blacksmithing“ or „work on order“. When you do that at 11, you will automatically repeat that action until 15 (eg 4 times) when the dragon arrives.

At your home allow „train alchemy“ (if you have access to emmy‘s room), „create burn salve“ (once you‘re proficient)….

(+1)

Thanks for your feedback. I may chance the functionality of the time skip in the future, but I'm happy with how it works for now. As the game develops and more content is added, there should be a little bit less repetitive grinding needed as more ways to train skills will be available.

Nah church open at like 1 the priestess is there

(-1)

one mor Bug: When you leave the cave it‘s not possible to enter again because the Guard stands in the way: He still says the same sentence, but stays in place (contrary to the first time you enter where he moves away)

Thanks for playing! I'll be releasing a patch later today with a bunch of bug fixes, I believe this issue is fixed but if you still experience this in 0.1.5e please let me know.

(+1)

will progress save between versions

(+1)

Not automatically, but you can transfer your save file over. In some cases there may be bugs caused by using an old savefile though, and it's possible new content won't appear correctly. I'll do what I can to keep older saves compatible, but my priority is that when I get to version 1.0 that everything will work there.

(+1)

so annoying how i finnaly killed empire general and theres no content beyond it like im level 21 now axe mastery 90 i cant even level up blacksmithing no more then 61

(+2)

Thanks for playing! It's really awesome to hear people spending so much time on this game that I've made. Unfortunately you've reached the end of the story for now, but I'll have an update with new content in a couple weeks or so.

In the new update pls consider adding an end to the Clearwood mines, like if you beat the last boss fight the man at the tent gives an award.

(+1)

The next major update should include additional content in the mines...

You went the opposite route to me... The first skills I got to level 90 were shield mastery and evasion... Just got unarmed high enough to punch the General to death at level 18 yesterday...

(+1)

How do you get permission to enter Emmy's room? only managed by lying to Mrs. Harris

(+4)

Okay, so this is a whole process that's heavily tied up with the acquisition of certain skills, but I'll tell you what I know. First, you need to get the burned status effect. Supposedly you can get lit on fire in the blacksmith's shop, though I've never had that happen yet. However, if you are lit on fire there, you can put it out with the bucket of water by your work station. You could also be lit on fire in combat, and have it go out before combat ends, but if combat ends before it goes out, you'll need water, which means either the blacksmith's bucket, a swim in the lake in the menar grove, or a jump down the well to put it out. Once burned, if still alive, you need to talk to the blacksmith. He'll give you a burn salve, and tell you about how alchemists are the ones who make them, which reminds you of Emmy. Afterwards, you can ask emmy about burn salves, and she'll give you permission to enter her room and get the one on her desk. After you've used 10 burn salves, you can ask her about how to make them, but keep in mind that after you're able to make them yourself, due to a current bug, you won't be able to get permission anymore, and will need to be able to lie your way in anyways.

(+3)

As to how to get burned at the blacksmith, you must choose a novel way to train fire resistance. Consider the burning flames within the shop carefully...

Is the download link right? I am just being paranoid and don’t want to download malware of something of the like

yes i downloaded 0.1.5d

(+1)

Yes, sorry this is the only way to share a game made in RPGmaker and itch hasn't reviewed it yet so they put some sort of warning around it.

(1 edit)

Little bug, if you chop down that starting tree while it's falling, pieces hit you, yet you survive, the scene continues, but after Graham says they have to take the log to the pile next to the office, the "Alright it's coming down..." scene happens again, meaning you can keep chopping the falling tree infinitely and can't really progress if you don't have enough evasion for the dodge option or the "brace yourself" options kills you

Thanks - I believe this has been fixed in the upcoming patch, but if you keep seeing this please let me know.

On which game versions is regen bugged where you can't get it? I'm on 0.1.5d and I am pretty sure I have all the requirements but I haven't gotten it yet.

0.1.5d it is available. Just got it yesterday…

(1 edit) (+1)

Can confirm that I also got it in this version, I'm pretty sure I got it dying in the caves, maybe dying in a fight is a requirement to first get it? I remember Graham said something to the effect of "I can't go down like this" when I got it

Edit: There's instructions of how to get it in the wiki, spoilers of course so click it if you want: https://learning-curve-rpg.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Skills

I can confirm I got it in 0.1.5d by dying in the caves with 25 physical fitness.

(1 edit) (+1)

Dying by the Dragon in the Village works too (once you have 25 Physical Fitness)

(2 edits)

When you go swimming in the forest you just keep on leveling up till expert/lv50 I dont believe this is intended

also seems like you can still equip the amour without being adventurer if apprentice blacksmith but not journeyman and if journeyman you can equip the axe

Thanks for playing! Swimming is a known bug and will be addressed in the next update.

For the armor, I'll add some hinting in-game for this but you need to have entered the mines and had your class change to "Adventurer" before you can equip.

You can actually equip the „Basic Armor“ before going to the mines. But not the „Good Armor“.

(+1)

So, I think things are great so far, however I have been trying to figure out if Mana Control actually does anything yet, and would appreciate it if someone who has figured out more could answer that question...

(1 edit) (+3)

Once you get the regeneration skill, you can gain the mana circulation skill which is basically healing magic at lvl 10 Mana Control. You need to ask the person in the church to learn it

Ah, thank you very much

Some notes about version 0.1.5d to the point I've currently played to.

These are more so about QoL, so I would recommend giving these more priority if possible:

- Like othe people suggested, add a way to do an action x number of times.

- A better way to view all skills at once, organized and categorized in a window maybe instead of the current one by one method, if it's possible of course, don't know much about how rpgmaker works.

These will be simply about cohesion, nothing major, I'll understand if trying to addall these branches takes time better applyied to other things or breaks some of the game's logic, a lot of these will also be me being nitpicky as hell lol:

- Check if fishing skill is present when the vision with his father happens, as currently even if you have it, Graham says he never ended up getting it, also keep track of fishing in the status as it's currently not showing.

- At the start, if you try to enter the office, Old Man Harris blocks you when he's at home and Mrs. Harris blocks you later which gives you the option to lie to her, on which if you fail, she says she's been there all morning and didn't hear him give you permission, but ever since you first got permission from him, she auto believes you and he also doesn't block you again even in next loops, which kinda contradicts the state they operate prior to that, making it seem this permission is transferring from loop to loop.

It also has the effect of blocking deception training there, currently not a problem since you can do so in the Emmy's room, but could potentionally block off deception training altogether if her room receives permanent access as well and there's no other ways of training it.

A way to make this work is adding a switch that resets on every loop, indicating whether you've gotten permission or not yet, or simply resetting the current switch it probably already has every time. Letting you enter normally if true or triggering the lie option if not, which leaves the success to a deception check.

Maybe this was done deliberately to avoid having to ask permission every time tho, which is fair. We can simply apply the logic that Graham asks permission without we seeing every time from then on, there's no problem with abstracting some things, but it would be better to make a decision on whether you want most things to reset, or if you'll follow an abstraction route when you can.

- At some point he starts to tell the old guy he already knows mighty chop and what he has to do when you enter the scene, but if you talk to him the dialogue where he tries to teach you it happens anyway. Maybe you can simply enable the mighty chop training by dafault from there on out and have him tell you something like "you know it already? cool, you can train in the stump next to me if you want", something to that effect.

After all the nagging, let me just say thank you and keep up the good work, you've no idea how excited I was when I this game recommended in the author's note. Been looking for a game like this ever since I started reading the novel.

(+1)

Thanks for playing and for all of your feedback! Some of what you've mentioned are known issues that will definitely be fixed in the next update (please refer to the update on devlog 0.1.5d for a list of known issues).

Saying "I'll do this action 10 times please" instead of having to click / hit a button 10 times would be nice but it kinda goes against the skill grinding theme, ya know? That said there is a time skip function at the clock in the house that is currently broken, but you still need to select things one at a time. There will be some... longer time skip functionality later in the game, once I get there.

The current skill book / status displaying skills one at a time is the simplest way for me to show only the skills that you've earned without giving any in-game hints about skills that are attainable but you're still at 0. If I figure out a way to display it better, I will.

The conversations with Foreman Taylor are on my "not broken, but needs revision" list, definitely need to clean that up, but people will definitely react when Graham suddenly has way more skill than he did (in their perspective) just one day earlier and may need to see proof.

(1 edit)

I am curious, how do I obtain the Regen which was mentioned here a couple of times?

Can someone throw me a hint or two?

make sure it's in the updates after it was pacted. In some updates there's a bug where you can't gain the skill.

And how would I get it?

Hint try taking damage in a fight

Thanks for playing! In order to unlock the regeneration skill, you'll need to be Journeyman (level 25) in Physical Fitness first

(+2)

I'm loving this so far! It gives exactly the feeling I want from a game based of the stubborn-skill grinder!

I've been playing for a bit on 0.1.5d and I have a bug where I can't equip armor or shields even though I can make them. They show up when I look in my items menu but when I go to equip them they aren't there.

(+1)

Thanks for playing. This is a common issue and I plan on adding some more in-game hinting, but you can't equip that stuff until you've gone into the Mines and your class changes to Adventurer. If you have the adventurer class and this problem persists, please let me know.

(1 edit) (+3)

Wiki here! https://learning-curve-rpg.fandom.com/wiki/Learning_Curve_RPG_Wiki *Do not click if you don't want spoilers, as of now, there aren't any, but I will update this if they do get added*

(+2)

I'm also stuck at the apprentice in lumber jack and axe issue. My lumber jack is 25 and my axe mastery is around 45 but I sill can't select the I'm there dialogue so I can get the quest for the better trees

Thanks for playing! This is a known issue and I should have it fixed next update this weekend.

(+2)

I am playing at 1.5d and I found four bugs so far.

1: When I use the Mighty Chop on the cursed tree, I get stuck in a loop where it keeps falling on me again and again (Only if I use Cut 4 times intestead can I progress)

2: Mr. Banning is asking me to get Apprentice in both Lumberjack and Axe Mastery, I am currently Journeyman with both yet the dialoge is greyed out.

3: Despite the bug #2, I can enter the north wood via the grass tile next to the road. (If I try walking on the road, it says the area is too dangerous and I can't enter)

4: Since reaching Apprentice in Woodcutting, if I talk to the trainer after deciding to tell the truth/lie, and I select the first dialoge option, I will be able to repeatadly select the first dialog without moving the conversation forward. (If I pick I can do more, or I can craft my own shield, I can continue without issues)

Thanks for playing! 1) and 2) are known issues and should be fixed soon. 3) should be an easy fix, thanks for finding it. 4) I'll look into as well.

One more thing, The green-haired kid tends to block the door of the Mr. Banning at roughly 8 timecycle, making access to him impossible

Any idea why this page is quarantined?

Yup, just some things with it being a .exe file, as that is what is given by the platform this game is made on (Rpg maker), you can kinda just ignore the warnings

(1 edit)

hey i think there's a bug when you chop the cursed tree, i managed to survive but i m actually stuck in the event because it restart the fall instantly

the sequence is like that: i mighty chop, i chop when it fall, i survive, i talk, then i have to chop it again, i talk, then i have to chop it, ....

edit: by the way, after i went journeyman on several skills, the clearwood blacksmith or the mine started to lag while some other area like the shield making area are not.

Thanks for playing! Checking and fixing the tree chopping is at the top of my to-do list, I'll hopefully have that fixed next weekend.

Not sure what would be causing lag in those areas, but I'll keep an eye out for other reports.

(1 edit)

uhh I think regen is still bugged for me... I'm on 0.1.5d with a 0.1.5b save file, could that have anything to do with it?

Edit: started a new game and there's a pretty good chance that the old save file was the problem

There's a bug that when you listen to the conversation in the lumberjack house it doesn't progress time or skills.

I've heard this before and have been unable to reproduce - can you tell me more about your game state and what happened?

It was in 0.1.5c. First thing I did was head to the lumberyard, started the cursed tree scene. I waited till Simon walked off and went to the door. Imma see if i can sent a save file

I like the skill grinder references. As to the game itself, it has a lot of promise.

Not a huge fan of dragon/empire coming at turn 15, would recommend 20 to increase viability of grinding wood maker and mana control skills. I do appreciate not needing crystal ball past lvl 5 though.

I think axe mastery has been discussed enough.

My main issue was after beating dragon for the first time the game took me to my last save after the following fight losing me a significant amount of progress.

Otherwise, I appreciate the mechanics of the game. I assume spells are coming in a future update?

Thanks for playing - make sure you're on 0.1.5c, there's a fix for axe mastery and an adjustment to the dragon fight. If you're still having troubles, let me know. Definitely more spells coming in future updates - Graham isn't going to turn into a full wizard, but he's not as opposed to using magic as some other skill grinders are.

(+1)

Just checked the update out, and I'm pretty sure this version is still broken. Even after becoming Axe mastery apprentice, Tylor still doesn't teach me the trick he promessed and instead repeats the line of "Chop wood, increase lumberjacking, increase damage" And after grinding away at perception and finally being able to ask Simon's father about the Mahar trees, still can't take the quest. The "I'm there" option is still greyed out despite being over level 10 in both lumberjacking and Axe mastery.

Also, I'm pretty sure you can no longer gain physical fitness from mighty chomp training. While grinding for axe mastery level 10, physical fitness never increased, despite it often increasing in the previous version. Though it seems like other sources for physical fitness still work fine

(+2)

I have a suggestions here to make the grind less button spammy. Maybe you can make it so when you press [Shift + Enter/Space] a slider would appear to chose how many hours you want to spend grinding. I know the point of the game is to grind and I'm for it, but spamming enter/space is kinda annoying tbh. If you added that slider, you can just do how every many hours you want all at once.

FR I wasted hours spamming spacebar

(+1)

Something else, Fire Resetence is either bugged or scuffed. because even after I reached jeurnyman in it, the burn status effect still applied and still does the same amount of damage (around 30-40) despite the fire attack doing zero damage. You should make it so that if the fire breath attack does Null damage, then it shouldn't be able to apply burn. And you should also make it (fire resetence) lessen the amount of damage burn does or something like that. Currently, the only way I could myself defeating the great Kobold is to get woodworking to 25, maybe get blacksmithing to 50 as well, and just level up a lot , hope I don't encounter a lot of kobolds on the way, and one shot the damn thing before the ludicrous burn kills me

Also, pseudo-bug I found is if you tried to entire Harris' room he will scream at you even if he's in his shop. Is he able to telepathically sense you attempting to enter then scream into your mind or something?

Mr Harris bug is fixed in the upcoming version. Fire resistance doesn't prevent you from becoming set on fire, but it decreases how long that lasts.

(+1)

I feel like it should at least decrease the damage from burn status, because a fire breath from a kobold doing no damage, but the subsequent burn status doing minimum 30 damage per turn, regardless of my equipment or resistance, feels odd.

(+1)

First of all, why does Axe Mastery refuse to level up? I fought kobolds and the dragon with axes (both the lumberjack one and the battle axe) yet it refused to level. I've cut down the tree and trained Mighty Chomp to the point I reached level 50 in lumber jacking yet Axe mastery never leveled up once.

I think I also did a sequence break. I leveled my perception enough to overhear the convo between the green haired kid and (if I'm not wrong) foreman Tylor. Which means everytime I interact with the door Tylor Graham says he wants to cut Mahar tree (which is impossible because that quest requires level 10 axe mastery, the only skill that never levels up)/

After leveling up my evasion and evading the falling tree, I move the long then Simon tells me to go talk with Tylor. I go to the door, and it starts the dialogue for the Mahar tree, Unless Tylor is the bald guy, in that case then when I go to him he just repeats the thing about leveling lumberjacking to increase the damage of mighty chomp/

Thanks for playing! Axe mastery bug is known, I'll have a fix out for that very soon. Unfortunately that breaks the logic for Foreman Taylor (the bald guy; the one you see in the eavesdropping is Simon's father), since he needs you to level up Axe Mastery to teach you a new skill.

(+1)

is it possible to make the game fullscreen? right now it takes up maybe a 4 inch by 4 inch area on my screen so its almost impossible to play

(+2)

Thanks for, I guess trying to play. Alt-Enter should take it to fullscreen, although I'm afraid the resolution is still the same  (640x480) and that's the biggest I can make it from this version of RPG Maker that I'm using.

(+2)

Yes. Press F1, it will show you list one of them would be "Full screen at launch" or something like that. Check its box, press confirm, then close and reopen the game

For some reason in LearningCurve_015b.exe I can't equip good quality armor or a shield.

(+1)

Your class changes once you've entered the mines, and that enables you to equip the higher quality armor. If you've entered the mines and still can't equip, let me know any other details and I'll look into it. Thanks for playing!

thank you it works now

(+1)

anyone know why this page is quarantined and when i try to launch my pc stops it?

It's because ur PC thinks it's a virus because of the way the developer make it. Just overwrite it, and it will work.

(+1)

Yup! It'll say something about how it hasn't been a long time since the account was made, and how that's a common way to spread viruses. After you click More Info it should allow you to download anyways

(+1)

Yeah, unfortunately nothing I can do about this for now, Windows by default is suspicious of .exe files but that's what RPGmaker gives me. Thanks for playing!

When attacking it shows NULL a lot of times. Maybe you needed to show 0?

(+1)

This is a restriction of the game engine - when an attack does no damage, RPGMaker says "null" instead of 0. If I can figure out how to change that, I will.

(1 edit) (+1)

When we talk with the guy inside the house to go get books from his office, the lady says it is not your room when I am going out of the room instead of when I am going in.

It would be good if we could check skills from the menu instead of only our room. There is the skills menu but it only lists combat skills for now. Checking skills when they show up one by one in our room is kinda annoying. Better to just use the menu to check it.

(+1)

Ah, good catch, I can fix that event so it only fires when entering the room not leaving.
There is a "status book" item that should be in your inventory that will give the exact same output as the room journal. I'll make sure there's something in-game mentioning that. Thanks for playing!

(1 edit)

Yo! Based Skill Grinder fan, nice. Honestly this scratches a really nice itch as a game.

Smol bug - you can speak to the guard at the kobold cave multiple times and he kinda just phases into the wall

Edit: you should make a discord or something if you're feeling like gathering a community! I think a lot of RR and maybe Scribblehub would enjoy it :)

(+1)

Good catch with the mines guard, been meaning to update that guy anyway. There's some lively discussion in the SSG discord (which is what led to Rhoden giving me that shoutout today) but I'm not ready to have my own discord for this yet, it's still just a little hobby I work on. Thanks for playing though, and please do share this page and encourage others to play!

(1 edit) (+1)

Seems like Axe Mastery is bugged. Got Lumberjacking to 45, but nothing seems to increase Axe Mastery. Attacking, using Mighty Chop, using Chop on the tree, using Mighty Chop on the tree, cutting logs into usable size for the old man, nothing. Messing around with Cheat Engine, it seems like the experience for Axe Mastery is tracked, but whatever's supposed to actually level it up just doesn't run.

(1 edit) (+1)

Maybe try rerunning it? That, or there's a hidden skill limit that's determined by total skill level. Mine went to 46 ;-; But I also just forgot to save so... Guess we'll have to see later

Edit: nvm ignore this I was talking about lumberjacking... Axe Mastery is indeed bugged

(+1)

Yep, Axe Mastery is a known bug and I should have a fix out for that soon, thanks for playing!
